She became deaf in her mid-twenties and a few years later also suffered from severe visual impairment.\u003cbr\u003e\nHer novels focus on working-class women, addressing class-related topics such as strikes and solidarity, and the supporting characters are often people from society’s margins. She also touches on sensitive subjects like abortion and homosexuality in her books.
