As an adult, she supported herself through sewing in Stockholm, where she moved in 1896. There, she independently built a studio with several employees. Östlund joined the Stockholm General Women's Club in 1903, where she also served as chairperson. She traveled on many agitation tours across the country, speaking in favor of women's suffrage. She was also active in the Social Democratic Women's Federation, including as chair of its executive committee from 1911 to 1917. In 1921, Agda Östlund and photographer Nelly Thüring became the first Social Democratic women in the Swedish Parliament. They were elected in the new election following women gaining the right to vote in Sweden. In Parliament, she was the first woman to speak in the Second Chamber. She was also the first woman elected as a member of the Law Committee, representing the Social Democrats. Agda Östlund was committed to fighting against domestic violence and advocating for women's rights to pensions and improved care for women and children.
